Sound

Well, well, well, if it isn't you again...

Just kidding! Hello there, and welcome back to my new blog of the day, where I will be talking about the sound in my movie opener. As I have already discussed with you guys about the first day of the editing process in my last blog, I will dive deeper into the editing of sound in our movie opener.

First, as I mentioned, the app or software that my group is choosing to use for editing is CapCut. Jahzara and Emijola are handling the physical part of editing, whereas me and Tina make the final editing decisions and give input. Essentially, I help give Jahzara and Emijola the ideas, and they put these ideas into place.

In our movie opener, there is both diegetic sound and non-diegetic sound. For example, the diegetic sound includes the waves and winds of the beach scene. It also includes the sobbing and crying of Emijola in the flashback scene. In addition, the flashback scene includes dialogue of Raina saying "Oh my gosh!" or Emijola saying, "Jahzara!" which is considered diegetic sound as the characters in the film can hear it. Likewise, in the school scene, the diegetic sound would be the sound of the bell ringing, the chattering of the students, and Ngoc's dialogue saying, "Emijola... are you okay?"

As for the non-diegetic sound, which is the sound that the characters in the film would not actually hear, includes the overlay of a cover by Alice Kristiansen of the song "Ocean Eyes" by Billie Eilish in the background, which plays throughout the movie opener, and the heart monitor beeping sound in the flashback scene. I was specifically responsible for finding a song to play in the background that would fit the sad and depressed mood of our movie opener. I was also responsible for finding heart beat audios or sound effects for the flashback scene that would show Jahzara dying, which would be a flatline sound of the heartbeat.

Lastly, some extra things or stylistic choices we did in terms of sound were that we used a j-cut when transitioning the audio from the last shot of the beach scene to the first shot of the school scene. The sound of the bell ringing is heard in the beach scene before the audience visually sees the students walking up the stairs and heading to their class. This j-cut allows us to effectively portray a smash cut, which helps the audience understand that, in terms of time, the movie opener is back to the present.
